OPTION 1.
A boat trip in the brackish Lagoon at Oviedo.

Because the lagoon is so shallow, the boatman gets out to push and the trip is quiet enough to bring one very close to Flamingoes and Roseate Spoonbills as well as other waders. The trip could also include continuing down the lagoon to an island where one can see the native iguanas…up close and personal….bring fruit! This is about an hour and a half west of the hotel, but an early start is required to avoid the winds that pick up mid morning. There is time to return to Santo Domingo in the afternoon.
Price: $60 for boat and local guide.

OPTION 2.
Half day tour of the Botanical Gardens in Santo Domingo.

This tour is ideal for those who only have a short amount of time in Santo Domingo. The Gardens offer a delightful sample of the Dominican Republic's unique birds and vegetation.
Price: $20

OPTION 3.
Villa Barrancoli • Rabo de Gato • Puerto Escondido

Villa Barrancoli

Recommended as the place to stay on the night of Day 2.
This means that the early morning departure time on Day 3 will be 4 AM
and not 2 AM (as from the hotel).
It also shortens the driving time on both days.

The main attraction of Villa Barrancoli is the good population of birds, both at the camp and on the Rabo de Gato trail. The trail is a walk of 1-2 hours leading into streamside woods with a variety of plants and large trees. Those interested in plants, butterflies and birds will enjoy this habitat.
The camp is also at the beginning of the international highway (4x4s necessary), leading to Aguacate on the Haitian border and to Zapotén’s cloud forest. The road then continues on to Pedernales.
Lago Enriquillo is also within a few hours drive!

Equipment:
The camp has two screen shelters with 2 beds.
4 enramadas with tents for 2 persons.
Mats, sheets and sleeping bags are available.
The bath house has 2 showers and two toilets and wash-hands basins. There is a Kitchen and dinners can be arranged with the cooks from our Community Group.
